I'm slightly obsessed with backpacking, travel, and van life. What about you?
You Can Do It! Solo Backpacking with Confidence
When I started backpacking, I never imagined I'd learn to love backpacking solo. As I gradually conquered my fear of hiking alone, the appeal of solo backpacking became indisputable.
I know it's not for everyone, but this video is an excellent starting point if you'd like to be a confident solo backpacker.

Lost Lake Hike - Discovering a Colorado Gem
Переглядів 22411 днів тому
A hike to Lost Lake in the Colorado Rockies is an ideal way to spend a morning as I start training for my upcoming thru-hike of the Tahoe Rim Trail. Lost Lake is a lovely alpine lake that sits at about 9500' in elevation. This hike is a prime opportunity to increase my fitness at altitude, while enjoying a good workout with Forest. Big News: Announcing My Next Thru Hike
Переглядів 47018 днів тому
I'm back from my truncated Pinhoti Trail hike and planning my next thru-hike for later this summer. It's just a few weeks away, so I need to start training pronto! Come along as I prepare for an amazing adventure on an epic trail that runs through part of California and Nevada - and even aligns with the PCT for a while. 😀 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 ᴘᴀᴛʀᴇᴏɴ: www.patreon.com/joyfulrambler ᴀᴍᴀᴢᴏɴ: amzn....
A NERO in Piedmont and Changes I Didn't Expect - Pinhoti Trail Day 14

It's another rainy morning and we both agree, it's time to dry out these wet feet! We're taking a NERO in Piedmont, AL today to boost our energy. Soon we'll be done with the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama and we're excited about reaching Georgia in a few days....sadly, one of us won't make it. So Much Water! Creek after Creek after Creek - Pinhoti Trail Day 13
Переглядів 21726 днів тому
It seems like ages since we did that 14-mile water carry. Day 13 on the Pinhoti Trail brings us more water than we could imagine. There’s one creek crossing after another. It’s a pleasure to get my feet wet and cool down in the hot, humid weather. Fire on the Trail? Pinhoti Trail Day 11
Переглядів 22528 днів тому
I thought Alabama was getting hot, but fire on the trail is more than I bargained for! We've been walking through lots of charred forest these past few days. Today, we find ourselves on the tail end of a prescribed burn on the Pinhoti Trail outside Heflin, AL. Shouldn't the fire be out? When you're thru-hiking, it's tempting to let weather dictate your plans. When you do, it's easy to get off track. Instead, Gunslinger and I are adopting an "embrace the suck" attitude on the Pinhoti Trail today. Rain won't get us down...it's just weather, right? Some days it's just hard to get hiking. This morning, I woke up tired and achy after a long, rocky day yesterday. There's nothing I'd like better than an easy hike on the trail today. We've heard about the "Stairway to Heaven" on the Pinhoti Trail trail and today we get to climb it! Today we're tackling the 16-mile segment of the Pinhoti Trail from Porter's Gap to Adam's Gap. We get to slack pack, thanks to trail angel Nancy from Next Step Hostel. Our plan was to get back on trail the next day. Of course, when it comes to thru-hiking, plans change. We've been hiking hard and earned a zero, so we're taking it! Is a 14-Mile Water Carry Making Me Crazy? Pinhoti Trail Day 5
Переглядів 434Місяць тому
At 2.2 lbs per liter, toting water for a 14-mile stretch on the Pinhoti Trail makes for a heavy pack. But it’s dangerous to skimp on essential hydration, so we sucked it up and took the weight penalty. Was the extra pack weight making me loopy? Maybe a little. It took me some time, Ive been afraid of the dark since I was 3, am 60 now. Didn’t start back paint until I was fifty. Fast forward, I solo all of the time, but I have rules. A trail to a spot where others are camping and of course a garmin.
Always happy to hike, trailrun, backpack alone. The solitude is very cleansing. I get that some people aren’t comfortable with it, and that’s okay.
Love your videos!!! Such great advice and you are so honest!
Thank you so much!!
Interesting video, and topic is one many women will find helpful. I mostly day hike alone and enjoy it, but prefer to meet up with someone to have company in the evenings, and share our days experiences. Difficult as you mentioned, to find a buddy who is available for multi days, so am now venturing into solo multiday hiking.
Thank you so much for this! I’m trying to gather the gear and the courage to get out there, and this video helped so much with the courage part. 🙏❤
Do it, I was so scared my first solo, now I laugh looking back at my terror and the contraptions I took to help. I still absolutely need an audiobook or podcast , otherwise my mind will wander.
That’s wonderful. 😀 The first time can be tough, but you can do it!
Only thing about hiking alone is you gotta have it together, your ducks in a row. Lot better now, you can get sat phones, etc. other than that no problem. It is very hard to find somebody that has the same pace as you. I can keep up with younger people until we get to hills. I can’t go up hills/grades as fast as I used to. Sometime s I meet women on the trail (day hikes) and I’ve learned you always smile say hi, etc and go on your way. Biggest thing is to tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to be at whatever place at such and such time then if something happens people will be looking for you. That was hard for me to get over because I feel fine but it’s the smart move because I’m 64 not 24. Going to a park or even your back yard is great advice. Because you’ll find out really fast what works and what doesn’t. That’s what I’m gonna do. What I did in the 70’s in the BSA. So much has changed and there is so much better gear available now most will be amazed.
I'm an experienced day hiker; any reason my first backpacking trip shouldn't be solo as long as I have the proper gear? (Wanting to try an out and back overnight less than 6 miles each way).
Sounds like a great plan! Have a wonderful time.
Lovely topic and so nicely elaborated my friend! Bravo
Thank you kindly!
I've used wool outer socks and poly inners and haven't had blisters for decades. In fact I cross rivers without changing socks and only take them off when sleeping at night.
Great info thank you.
You look happy .and you look great . We are happy for y'all
this is wonderfully insightful: thank you for your beautiful advice to make the best memories!
Great advice! Subbed! Also, I love your flannel :)
Neat! I'll have to check this one out the next time I come to Estes. Hope you are enjoying living in Colorado. It's where I would go if I left California.
I subscribed because you answered all of my questions. This is my first time bringing my backpacking gear.
Could you share some info on dog care on the trail in a video at some point. Luv you videos. I’m just getting started at 60.
Great idea, thank you!
Fantastic presentation my friend, trail looks so picturesque! Love it
Glad you enjoyed it
hello my friend thank you for sharing this awesome hike with us! so far Kiki is doing great on her training we can hike ten miles a day now with no trouble, for a basset hound that is impressive. the weather here in Pueblo Colorado has ben really hot so we do our hikes super early 4am-8am. as soon as we get some money together Kiki and me would really like to buy some of your t-shirts and stickers. 🐕✌🤓
Thanks so much, that would be awesome! Getting out early is so smart. And I think it’s one of the most beautiful times of the day.
Forest you are such a good hiker, but I need to come up and show you how to swim in Lost Lake! Ruff ya Sniper Jebediah
I think experienced older backpackers is for so long nothing bad has ever happened to them so they get over confident in their what they can physically do.
Interesting you mentioned solo hiking. I often have to resort to solo hikes for lack of knowing other folks that want to take long walks in the woods! not everyone shares the passion. Lol.
I lived there in late 90s and hiked hundreds of miles on the front range. You might try some hikes from Lake Brainard near Ward,CO. Hike to Lake Isabella is amazing. Hike to Mitchell Lake and beyond is really challenging at 11,000 feet and has a weird little unnamed lake that is covered with a foot of moss and tall trees. Walking on it wobbles the trees around! 4th of July Trailhead to Caribou Pass is memorable. Great hike!
Awesome, thanks for the hiking suggestions!
@@JoyfulRambler If you do ever go to trailheads at Lake Brainard get their before 9am or you might not be able to park! It is a very popular area. Love your videos!
Forest looked like he had a good time! Bet he slept well that night.😊
Yes, it seems to have been a windy spring this year. But Happy Solstice! Thanks for taking us on this hike. 🥰 So beautiful!
Cell phones are adding sat connection when no towers are around. Android is pending the next update. Might be free.
Looks like Forest enjoyed the hike too!
The biggest mistake an older backpacker like myself could make is watching your video. Some of us are still coordinated at 75 years young...
I’ll be hiking the TRT with 3 other women in July. Who knows, maybe our paths will cross. ~CrazyQuilt. Happy Trails 🥾🥾
They've stopped selling hexamine tablets here in the UK so it's great to know that there's alternatives out there
Useful info, thanks!
I can't wait to see the Tahoe trail videos! Kiki and me are training for the Denver to Durango trail here in Colorado. my super awesome copilot is a basset hound and is limited on how far she can walk easily in one day. so we are going dog packing this way she can rest those little legs as I pedal our bike 25-50 miles a day on the Colorado trail. please be safe on your adventures and enjoy the truly majestic Tahoe trail my friend 🐕✌😎.
That is awesome! Have an amazing time on your trip. I’d love to try bike packing someday.
Was so meant to come across your channel. I'm 55 and wanting to get into it. Feel so meant for me absolute beginner
Welcome!
What a gorgeous trail for your “stroll”. Would you please share where it is located. Looking forward to your videos on the TRT.
It’s a beautiful spot. Pella Crossing in Hygiene, CO.
Your inspiring, I'm 60 & live in Australia & am going to book "The Overland" track...
I would love to do the TRT. Hopefully one day I will be able to hike there. I cannot wait to see your videos of the hike. CS and I are planning our anniversary trip to Tahoe this summer. Sniper says he loves for me to hold his water bowl for him. Happy Hiking
I think that Audrey Adventures did that trail last year. She lives in CO. Your stroll was probably just the right length for Forrest. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
I follow a woman named who is Canadian. She’s done the PCT and she does hiking all over. Her and sometimes her husband. The terrain is vastly different than the Eastern part of the country. Much much more open. After watching your Pinhote vids I suggested to my buddy that we push it to the Fall. Too hot, too humid, bugs, bugs and more bugs in the Summer.
So sorry for your loss. Thanks for taking us along for your Pinhoti journey!
Hello, young lady. I'm 67 years old. I'm going to reblock an Appalachian trail on the 6th of July 2024 Carlisle PA
So sorry to hear this and for your loss. Prayers for you and your family. There will be other trails.
Me and my friend are moving away from campgrounds too hiking and camping next. I have a bad back but he's 74. Mainly for him I'm not pushing us. I'm into Bushcraft so carry too much. But I agree. I won't hike alone. I think you backpackers are smarter with lighter gear.
You cannot have life without death ! .... The two are entertainable at the roots of existence for all mankind. Take the time to understand death & you won't fear death. For God ( Jesus ) is in control of everything.
I love Darn Tough socks, its all I wear anymore. Having sore feet is the worst.
So sorry about y'all's loss.
Thank you for the kind words and encouragement!
That was a weird day. You handled everything with grace. I know you’ll be back to hike the second half. But after your other summer hike. I can’t wait to follow along on UA-cam. !
I loved that campground
So sorry to watch and hear of the terrible loss. Pleased you could get back so quick to be with family
Weak arms, weak legs, top heavy and not agile at all. Center of gravity is up by their backpack. Absolutely no agility at all. Slow mentally and physically, and I do not mean walking speed, but reaction time. Hating rocks has to do with no agility and lack of muscle fitness. Do not wait till you are hiking to do that. Go for walks in your area you live and build up strength that way, safely. Walk the hills near where you live or do stair walking. Hiking is the only thing I see people do with no training what so ever. All other disciplines require fitness training.
Joey, I sure hated to hear that Andy’s dad passed away, but I am certainly glad that you were able to be there to support him and the family as I know they appreciated that very much. Congratulations to Gunslinger on finishing the trail. When you come back maybe I can join you and we can hike some again. I enjoyed this video series and cannot wait to follow the next hike. Much love to you and Andy from Alabama
Thank you. I will let you know when I come back, it would be awesome to hike together for a bit.
